The cocoa bean is the fruit of the cacao tree (Theobroma cacao), a tropical plant native to the Americas' equatorial regions. The fluid paste, or liquor, is made from the processed cocoa bean and is used to make cocoa powder and chocolate. 
The word "cocoa" is derived from the Nahuatl word "cacahuatl", which is taken from the Spanish word "cacao". Theobroma Cacao is the botanical name for the cacao (or cocoa) tree.

1. Theobroma Cacao is the botanical name for the cacao (or cocoa) tree. The name comes from the Greek words 'theos', which means gods, and 'broma', which means food. (The food of God= theo+ broma.)

2. The cocoa plant comes in three varieties: Criollo (Central America), Forastero (Wesy Africa and South America) and Trinitario (North America) 

3. Cocoa Beans as Money- Mayans and Aztecs used cacao beans as money to purchase food, clothing and other items , as well as to make the bitter drink Xocoatl. Cocoa beans were more valuable than gold to the Aztecs.

4. Each tree yields about 1,000 beans per year, enough to manufacture one kilogram of chocolate.

5. Cocoa trees grow at a snail's pace. A cocoa tree takes roughly 5 years to produce its first seed pods.

6. Cacao beans are not the same as cocoa beans. The main distinction between the two is how the cacao bean is processed once it has been harvested. Cacao beans are unroasted, dry seeds from unprocessed cacao pods. Cocoa beans, on the other hand, are highly processed type of cacao bean.
